BEGINNING OF TIME
In
the grand tapestry of human history, time has been both a boundless ocean and a
fleeting whisper. From ancient civilizations that worshipped time as a deity to
the modern era, the concept of time has evolved significantly.
The
measurement of time itself has a rich history, with innovators contributing to
its evolution over centuries. From sundials and water clocks to atomic clocks,
the quest for accurate timekeeping has driven human ingenuity. Key figures like
Archimedes and Christiaan Huygens have left their mark on timekeeping devices.
Yet,
despite its abundance, time has become a scarce resource in our fast-paced
world. We race against the clock, struggling to make the most of every moment.
In
Islam, time is considered a trust from Allah, a precious gift to be utilized
wisely. As the Quran reminds us, “O you who believe! ...let every soul consider
what it has sent forth for the morrow, and fear Allah...” (Quran 59:18). As we
reflect on the significance of time scarcity, let us consider its impact on our
lives and the importance of utilizing this gift wisely.
THE ISLAMIC VIEW ON TIME SCARCITY
In
Islam, time is regarded as a sacred trust (amana) from Allah, a precious gift
that must be utilized prudently. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
forewarned us, “The Hour will not come until time becomes scarce” (Bukhari).
This Hadith highlights the significance of time scarcity as a harbinger of the
approaching Judgment Day.
As a
limited resource, time is a constant reminder of our mortality and the urgency
to fulfill our purpose in life. The Islamic perspective on time emphasizes the
importance of valuing every moment, utilizing it for righteous deeds, and
avoiding procrastination. By recognizing time as a trust from Allah, we
acknowledge our accountability for how we spend it.
As
time becomes increasingly scarce, we are reminded to prioritize our actions,
seek forgiveness, and strive for a virtuous life, lest we face regret on the
Day of Reckoning. Some excerpt from Quran and hadith are mentioned below to
highlight the significance of time scarcity:
Quran Verses:
"The day will come when time will be scarce, and no one will be able to
escape it." (Quran 22:47)
"The time is near when the Hour will come, and the moon will be
split." (Quran 54:1)
"The Day of Resurrection will come suddenly, and the time will be
scarce." (Quran 22:55)
Hadith:
"The Prophet said, 'The Hour will not come until time becomes scarce, and
a person will be given his book (of deeds) in his right hand, and he will say:
'O my Lord! How can I read what is in it when I am blind?'" (Bukhari)
"The Prophet said, 'Time is scarce, and the Day of Resurrection is near.
Whoever wants to move forward, let him prepare for it.'" (Tirmidhi)
"The Prophet said, 'The scarcity of time is a sign of the approaching
Hour.'" (Abu Dawud)
These
verses and Hadith emphasize the scarcity of time and the importance of
utilizing it wisely, as the Day of Resurrection and the Hour are near.
THE RACE AGAINST TIME
Modern
life has become a high-speed chase, where every moment counts and time seems to
fly by at an unprecedented pace. Technological advancements have led to a world
where instant gratification is the norm, and the concept of patience has become
a rare virtue. This rapid pace has resulted in a phenomenon known as time
compression, where the subjective experience of time is condensed, leaving
individuals feeling like they are constantly running out of time.
The
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) forewarned us of this phenomenon, saying,
“The time will come when a person will not find time to pray” (Tirmidhi). This
prophetic warning highlights the dangers of allowing the pace of life to
dictate our priorities, leading us to neglect our spiritual and personal
well-being.
In
today’s fast-paced world, it is easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle,
sacrificing precious moments for the sake of productivity and efficiency.
However, this relentless pursuit of speed and progress comes at a cost. We are
left feeling exhausted, stressed, and disconnected from our inner selves and
the world around us.
As
we race against time, we must remember that true fulfillment and happiness
cannot be found in the constant pursuit of more. Rather, it is in the moments
of stillness, reflection, and connection that we find true meaning and purpose.
A DIRE WARNING
As we recklessly squander our most precious resource, time, we imperil our very existence. The consequences of time scarcity are far-reaching and devastating, threatening to destroy our relationships, mental and physical health, and overall well-being.
Our
relationships crumble as we prioritize productivity over people, leaving loved
ones feeling neglected and unvalued. The bonds that once brought joy and
comfort now fray and snap, leaving us isolated and alone.
Our
mental health suffers as the pressure to keep up with the breakneck pace of
modern life takes its toll. Anxiety, depression, and stress become our constant
companions, eroding our sense of purpose and fulfillment.
Our
physical health deteriorates as we sacrifice self-care for the sake of
productivity. Chronic illnesses, fatigue, and pain become our new normal, a
grim reminder of the price we pay for our addiction to speed.
On
the Day of Judgment, we will be held accountable for our time, as the Prophet
warned: “A person will be questioned about their time” (Tabarani). The fear of
facing Allah with a ledger of wasted moments should strike terror into our
hearts. Will we be able to justify our recklessness, our neglect of what truly
matters?
Let
us tremble at the thought of facing the consequences of our time scarcity. Let
us repent and reform, prioritizing what truly counts before it’s too late. For
in the end, it is not the quantity of our accomplishments that will matter, but
the quality of our character.

two most valuable resources we have in life are time and energy. Use them
wisely” – Robin Sharma
A PATH TO A FULFILLING LIFE
Effective
time management and mindfulness are essential for a purposeful life. The
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of prioritizing
tasks, avoiding procrastination, and utilizing time effectively, saying, “The
best of actions is that which is done in the present moment” (Bukhari). By
adopting the following strategies, individuals can optimize their time usage
and appreciate the present moment:
- Set clear goals and priorities
- Create a schedule and stick to it
- Avoid procrastination and stay focused
- Utilize time effectively, avoiding wasteful activities
- Practice mindfulness and presence in daily tasks
- Appreciate the present moment and cherish its blessings
The
routines of successful individuals, including prophets and caliphs, offer
valuable insights into the habits that contribute to their achievements. The
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and Caliph Umar ibn Al-Khattab prioritized
their time, allocating specific hours for prayer, reflection, community
service, governance, worship, and personal development. There are many other
high achievers in the world who are known for their excellent time management.
We can learn from these successful individuals the importance of effective time
management. By adopting their practices, we can maximize our time, cultivate
mindfulness, and live a more intentional and meaningful life, ultimately making
every moment count.
A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY TOWARDS JUDGMENT DAY
As
we journey through life, our souls yearn for a deeper connection with the Divine.
The fragility of our existence reminds us of our mortality and the
accountability that awaits us on Judgment Day. This reality beckons us to
reflect, prepare, and balance our lives with the divine will.
We
must confront our fears, doubts, and weaknesses, and surrender ourselves to
Allah’s mercy. Our faith must be nurtured through righteous deeds, compassion,
and justice. Balance is key, harmonizing our worldly pursuits with spiritual
aspirations.
Humility,
compassion, and hope must guide us on this journey. May Allah guide us, and may
our deeds be a testament to our faith.
END OF TIME
As
we rapidly approach the end of our time, the reality of Judgment Day looms
closer. Time is dwindling at an alarming rate, and its management is crucial
now more than ever. From an Islamic perspective, time is a trust from Allah,
and we are accountable for how we utilize it. With each passing moment, we are
one step closer to facing our Creator.
As
we strive to make the most of our limited time, let us not forget to pass on
this vital lesson to our children. Teaching time management to our kids from a
young age is crucial, so they understand the importance of prioritizing tasks,
avoiding procrastination, and utilizing their time effectively. By instilling
these values in our children, we set them up for success in this life and the
next.
Let
us not waste this precious trust; instead, let us make every moment count.
Remember, time is running out at an unprecedented pace, and we must utilize it
wisely before it’s too late. In the words of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be
upon him), “The best of actions is that which is done in the present moment”
(Bukhari). Let us make the most of our time and live a life that is pleasing to
Allah. May Allah guide us to utilize our time wisely and grant us the ability
to teach our children the importance of time management. Ameen.

is the scarcest resource of all, and unless it is managed, nothing else can be
managed” – Stephen Covey
